Retrieving a product image URL in a custom block seems to be non-trivial and can be done “wrong” in many ways: Getting full image URL of product in template

In How to correctly select the first item from a filtered collection? I realize that you should not use $collection->getData() (and there’s the obligatory warning for a typical performance trap)

A reminder, to prefer theme.xml over local.xml: Is it possible to include a parent local.xml?

Without answer yet, and probably there is no solution as of Magento 2.0: Localized frontend value for getCustomAttribute() (select or multiselect attributes) – but as I commented: I’m going to continue to ask these questions when I’m hitting walls, and if it’s just to highlight, where the API is incomplete, especially when it’s about the catalog
Marius asked a good question on Unit testing source models. Besides my answer on this concrete case, the elaboration by Vinai on “Should I test X?” or “How should I test X?” is a valuable advice for everybody.

Magento 1

A question on logic in the frontend: Where should i put my function if i need it only in one Template?

I’m back with fresh Magento content (and hit 1000 answers on magento.stackexchange.com with this unspectacular FGITW answer)

Magento 2

Raphael (DigitalPianism) asked, what’s the status of M2 regarding PSR compliance? (not PCI!) and I gave an overview as far as possible. Obviously, the PSR-8 Huggable April’s fool is only implemented by the community!
I tried to Get Category IDs for Product via Service Contract / API – unfortuntely the answer seems to be: impossible
With Get child products (Product Type instance) via Service Contract I had more success, and also proved that I am capable of asking stupid questions as well
And here’s a more high level question that could need some attention: How to avoid Law of Demeter violation (“Newable objects should not [reference] an injectable object”)

Magento 1

A question on testing time dependent features in Magento 1: How to change magento date/time. The “mock time()” trick does not work due to lack of namespaces.

No, I did not give up this series, but there was Developers Paradise (read my review!), then vacation, and I stepped back a bit.

Now there is enough material that it’s time for a new post:

Magento 2

I try to make up for confusing class names and missing API docs here: Magento 2: difference between Api\SearchCriteriaBuilder and Api\Search\SearchCriteriaBuilder?
A problem with unit tests and code generation: Generate factory or proxy in unit tests: “ReflectionException: Class …Factory does not exist”
In Use preconfigured builders (e.g. for SearchCriteria) in Magento 2 I deal with specialized, reusable, side effect free builders.
A small example for the usage of repositories of the service contracts: Get product collection with product ids
And corresponding, my question when service contracts should not be used: Is there ever a reason to prefer $model->load() over service contracts?
There might be observers that you don’t want to have. This is how you disable them: Remove Observer from third party extension

Magento 1

A few tips for collections, that you might not know:
- Calculated columns: What is the use of addExpressionFieldToSelect over addFieldToSelect?
- Filter by calculated columns: CE1.9.2 – Filter Orders collection on hasInvoices()
- Filter by calculated columns in EAV: Filter Product Collection By Another Attribute In Product Collection eg ‘attribX’, array(‘gt’ => ‘attrib-Y’)

Do you miss good old local code pool overrides? Read this: Override abstract class in Magento 2
Confused with the mixture of $(), $$() and jQuery() in JavaScript? What does $$ in javascript of Magento 2 mean?

Saving CMS pages and blocks programmatically (e.g. in a setup script) can be tricky: Saving CMS block/page from collection removes store ID’s
Somebody couldn’t overwrite template via xml added by external module – a common pitfall with the layout XML when block names are reused.
And a quickie, which events to observe to react on cart changes: Is there an event that fires when the cart/quote is empty?

Looks like I am not alone with this experience but it’s not really how it is supposed to be. This lead me to the question Which compilation commands are needed in developer mode and when?
There seems to be a bug in certain Magento versions with order reports and timezones but I could not quite pin it down yet: Magento Reporting – Is it bucketing by UTC?

Marius attended my question about generated PHTML files in Magento 2 and also found out when they are used: When and how are phtml templates generated in view_pre geprocessed?
I found a bug in the JavaScript function Mage.Cookies.clear(). It looks like it never worked, and actually it is not even used in the core. Here I describe the fix: Mage.Cookies.clear() not working
In How to limit characters in system.xml for textarea in magento I show how easy validation of inputs in the Magento configuration is possible (Spoiler: You don’t need jQuery).
There is an interesting optimization opportunity if you don’t need URL rewrites for products: How do I get Magento to always give the /catalog/product/view/id/ style url for products?
A problem that other Magento users who try to use Varnish with HTTPS might know as well: https redirection loop even with X-Forwarded-Proto

New Questions:

I asked myself if it makes sense as an extension developer to add the whole Magento repository as dev-requirement: Magento 2 as composer dev requirement for extensions – the answer is as often “it depends”. It was already interesting to get insights from companies like Aheadworks and Fooman.
There is still no answer to How does translation scope work in Magento 2? and I fear it’s because it cannot be answered. But to be sure, I offered a bounty: +50
